Captain Ben Roggie is the owner and founder of Black River Valley Outfitters and River Valley Charters. Born and raised in Carthage NY, he started hunting and fishing at an early age, and it has become his lifelong passion. Waterfowl and Turkey hunting are his specialty, and they are the two seasons out of the year that he enjoys the most! He is usually assisted on his hunts by his Black Labrador Retriever "Cabela" or his Boykin Spaniel "Flash". Capt Ben is an avid conservationist reserving personal time each year to build duck boxes, nest tubes, wetland projects, and volunteer as a committee member for the Long Falls Ducks Unlimited chapter. He is a seasoned waterfowl and turkey hunter who has spent his life hunting NY, and familiarizing himself with the land, water, and bird habbits & behaviors. His favorite part of the business is hunting with, and meeting new people! If you are hunting with one of the other guides, chances are you will still meet Ben either before, during, or after the hunt even if its just to shake hands and say "Hello"! "The best part of this business is being able to meet so many people! My goal is to create a personal relationship with all of my customers, and provide an experience that makes them want to come back year after year. Even if I'm not the guide hunting with them while they are here, I will go out of my way to meet them if possible and create that relationship!"
Seth is a die hard, know no limits, seasoned hunter that lives for waterfowl hunting. To the ducks and geese, Seth is their worse nightmare! Waterfowl hunting has become second nature to Seth, and when it comes to the scouting aspect of waterfowl hunting he knows no limits and does whatever it takes to find the birds, even when they are in short supply! He is a full season staff member beginning each year with spring snow geese, assisting with scouting efforts in May for turkeys, spending the summer working on "behind the scenes" projects, and relentlessly pursues ducks and geese through the fall months. Hunting with Seth is always a fun and interesting time, and his sense of humor and positive attitude are why people specifically ask to hunt with Seth again when they return! He is a Pro-Staff member of Bettis Custom Calls and endorses Anser Decoy products.
Chris is an avid outdoorsman who is fluent in both waterfowl hunting and riverbank salmon fishing. Although Chris hunts and guides for both ducks and geese throughout the waterfowl season, he is one of our go to guides for geese throughout the fall as they seem to be his specialty. If a cast and blast is what your looking for, chances are you will be with Chris at some point during your trip as he is one of our most experienced river fisherman! River bank fishing for salmon during the fall run is one of his passions, and if your looking to hook into a big king after a morning of waterfowl hunting, Chris is the guide you want!
Justin is one of BRVO's top early season duck hunters. He lives and breathes waterfowl 24/7, 365, but has a nack for finding those small, early season puddler holes that produce some of the best wood duck, teal and mallard shoots that we offer! Justin is also very fluent with Canada Geese, and is no novice when it comes to putting educated, pressured, late season migrators feet down over the decoys. All hunting aside, he is one of our hardest working guides when it comes to the "behind the scenes" work that is required to make our hunts productive. During the summer months he helps with property management, building blinds, rigging decoys, assists with landowner relations, and during the fall months is a crucial part of our scouting team.
One of the most enthusiastic guides to join our staff is none other than Cole Worden! There are very few days throughout the year where Cole is not doing some type of work for BRVO. Whether it be scouting, hands on projects, landowner relations, or guiding a hunt, this guy does it all and all year long! His success is a product of his ambition and motivation. A very open minded individual, Cole is always trying new things while afield, attempting to learn something new on each hunt. He excels at putting our clients on world class wood duck shoots during our first split, and is experienced at working those wary late season ducks and geese into gunning range. He is also one of our most experienced snow goose guides, either guiding or assisting on a hunt almost every day of the spring snow goose grind! Cole is also one of our top guides for spring turkeys. His hunts on private land for our trophy managed birds have an extremely high success rate, but when it comes to public land Cole is our top guide! He has a nack for calling in high pressured, mature toms into the decoys on public property.
After spending a full season assisting with hunts during the 2015 season, Ken Burns officially joined our guide staff in 2016. No stranger to waterfowl or hunting in general, Ken has spent his life hunting upstate New York. He has quickly become one of our most dedicated staff members when it comes to the crucial elements of this business. Ken is not afraid to put the rubber to the pavement in search of hot fields, and has spent countless hours on the water, as well as trudging through back country swamps in search of ducks. During the spring Ken assists with our snow goose hunts, and during the month of May is one of our most experienced turkey hunting guides. If a mature tom is what your after, this guy can put you on the bird! His trophy managed properties are 2nd to none when it comes to not only quality, but quantity of birds!
Captain Joe Sparacino
A native to Northern NY, Joe began hunting with his father and brother Chris at a young age. He is no stranger to the backwater swamps and agricultural fields of our area. Joe has put countless hunters on world class shoots, from early season puddle ducks, to high volume field shoots, and even full drake limits of sea ducks and divers gunning the waters of Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes. Joe captains a comfortable 19' Duckwater boat on Lake Ontario, as well as in the Finger Lakes during the Western Zone 2nd split. If a late season hunt from the waters of Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes are what your after, Joe can accommodate! Typically you will find Joe hunting with the assistance of his retriever "Boone", a spectacular dog with a strong natural drive! During the month of May, Joe joins our guide staff in pursuit of trophy longbeards. His properties and experience produce world class hunts for mature toms. Although Joe has a high success rate, his enthusiasm and fun personality are why people request to hunt with him again when they return!
Chirs Sparacino has spent his life hunting Northern NY, beginning at a young age hunting with his father and his brother Joe. His ambition and experience are two factors that contribute to not only his success, but customer satisfaction! Chris begins his season in May, guiding hunters on world class turkey hunts for mature toms. As with all of our Spring turkey guides, Chris has a high success rate on turkeys. During the Fall, he guides our hunters throughout the season and is fluent with everything from field hunts for honkers, to backwater and big water hunts for ducks. Chris also captains a comfortable 19' Duckwater boat, gunning the waters of Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes. When you book a late season hunt for either the Northern or Western zone of the state, there is a good chance you may find yourself gunning from the Duckwater boat with Chris!
