Phonomenal gunning this year on the big water! After having such a productive 1st split on puddle ducks, we found ourselves asking "how could it get any better"?....Well IT DID! Our field hunts have prduced exceptional gunning for migrating honkers, and we have experienced some great mixed bag puddle duck hunts from the marsh. The big water float and shore line hunts however have been our most consistent during this 2nd split, not only with big shoots and full limits but with drakes only gunning on multiple shoots!....
Sea ducks have been extremely productive this season on Ontario, along with other diver species. While bufflehead, goldeneye, bluebills, and other diver species have presented excellent gunning opportunities, the oldsquaw (longtail) gunning has been superb! The BRVO guides have been seeing very large and impressive numbers of oldsquaw this season with plenty of mature drakes! Hunters that were in pursuit of trophy drakes with long sprigs were in luck this year as these birds have presented clean shots over the decoys on almost every big water hunt thusfar! Scoters have also been abundant this season, many times mixed into the bag during our hunts for longtails! The photo at the beginning of this article is one of several taken by guides Joe and Chris Sparacino, showing an impressive bag of drake longtails with a few scoters mixed in!
While the gunning has been good, there have been days when mother nature seemed to have other plans. Safety is our number 1 concern on any given hunt, but the guide staff at BRVO uses extra caution when hunting these deep water ducks. There have been several days this season where dangerous weather conditions forced us to change plans. This is where our staff's knowledge of the water, and quality of their vessels allows us to hunt alternative locations while still producing comfortable, and productive hunts. Guides Joe Sparacino, and Chris Sparacino, had several safe and successful hunts from their 19' Duckwater on days where most others were forced to leave their boats on the trailer! Even when the larger bays of the lake are too dangerous for any boat, the BRVO guides utilize alternative launch sites, and shore line sites that still produce five star gunning for our hunters.
With our season soon coming to a close here in the Norther Zone, there are only a handful of hunts left to be excecuted by our staff. It is now, that we begin to prepare our vessels, gear, and ourselves for the 2nd split of the NY Westerm zone, the Finger Lakes region of the state! Frigid temperatures although a day late for the Northern Zone, are in the forecast for the coming weeks. This is the exact type of weather that creates recipe for world class gunning in the Finger Lakes! We can only hope that the gunning during the Western zone split will be as productive as it has been for us here in the Northern zone! One thing is for sure, you will find the BRVO staff wherever you find the largest concentration of birds in the Finger Lakes during the first 2 weeks of January!
